La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin on the banks of the Loire

Only 3.5 miles from Orléans, not far from Beauce and the Sologne and on the outskirts of the Forest of Orléans, La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin is a small town offering the perfect environment to get away from it all in the Loiret area. There are fine walks to be taken along 5 km of the Loire riverbank. Walkers coming from Orléans via the GR3 approach it along the former towpath, a route that reveals all the beauties of the Loire landscape.

Its name dates back to the 6th century, when Frankish King Clovis brought the elderly Saint Euspice and his nephew Mesmin to found a monastery on the Micy peninsula, on the far banks of the Loire. According to the legend, Saint Mesmin fought a dragon in Béraire (as the settlement was known at the time), thus giving this place its name. The Saint-Mesmin church was constructed above the dragon’s lair in the 11th and 12th centuries. Today this simple, harmonious building provides a majestic view over the Loire. Staying at the Orléans Parc Hotel in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin you will benefit from the perfect location to enjoy this charming town on the banks of the Loire.
